Sarah, Cecile, Vikas (the owner of the travel agency we had been using in India), and I all hopped in Vikas's fancy new car! We cruised out to an uppidy, swanky part of town to go to an upscale restaurant. Vikas was in the mood to impress and we were in the mood to be impressed. We were four good lookin individuals all dressed up for a night on the town.
The restaurant was lovely, and definately compared to some I have been to in Manhattan. The food was divine, and we drank exotic drinks and shared the intimate details of our lives in the soft glow of our table candle. Vikas told us all about what it was like to be in an arrainged marriage. He had entered into this arrainged marriage to please his grandparents as a dying wish for them. They had raised him, and now they were gone, and all he had left was a promise and life he had accepted in their honor. He loved his wife the way you love some one you have known for a long time, but not passionately or with all of his heart. He filled his free time with lovely distractions, but had yet to fall in love the way we are free to in America. He loved his child with the deepest parts of his heart but felt disconnected from the family life he was expected to live. We all ooo'ed and aaahh'ed at his story and truly felt sorry for him. The atmosphere, the sad story, the candle light, the drinks, and the fancy food were charming us. That and this man's good looks. Sarah had been crushing on him since we started this adventure, and the three of us were all eye lashes fluttering and doting on him as his 3 dates.
After Vikas finished his story, Cecile piped in to share her story. She told of how she married a man who was kind, and dependable, and completely in love with her. She married him for those reasons, and not because he made her heart sing in the ways someone you are completely, passionately head over heels for does. She never felt that for him. But, he was a sure thing, and he was the safe bet, and a good man, and that was enough for her when she was young and ready to marry. Now nearly 20 years later their lives were completely seperate and she was ready to embrace her upcoming divorce a little scared, but with her head held high in hopes that one day she could find some one to make her heart sing. And then all of our attention, including Vikas's turned to her, and we all doted upon her with our adoration and support.
After that it became clear that across the table through the candle light Vikas and Cecile began to make eye's at one another. It seemed that they had one thing after another in common during our conversations. First it was their detachment from their failing marraiges, then it was the fact that they hated spicy food, and they didn't seem that far apart in age either. By the time we all decided to hit up the club, they were full fledged flirting, and we were all flying past tipsy fast.
The club had a long, black, classy bar with tall elegant bar stools. The music was American 80's jams, but mostly the one's we didn't listen to, and everyone in the club sang along. There was a leather couch wall and small tables with sheek candles and geometrically shaped small stools around them. The place was pretty cool and totally cheesy at the same time. We proceeded to order more drinks, and jumped up to the dance floor to be the first to boogie. After all, Sarah and I are wild, blonde, American galz, and Cecile is a bubbly, french princess. We were in the mood to make a scene. This was our one mega de boucherous night in India. We wanted to live it up to the fullest. The club loved us because we were having so much fun and everyone got up and joined us on the dance floor. Cecile and Vikas began to sit closer and sip their drinks face to face as Sarah and I twirled on the dance floor spilling our frosted coffee martini's and giggling. At some point, which turned out to be exactly the same moment I decided to cut myself off from drinking any more, a fresh coffe martinin was delivered to my hand and I was told it was on the house. It turned out to be from an old man who was sitting at the bar enjoying watching our blonde heads bobb around the dance floor. Apparently he owned the club, and was glad to see us having so much fun in his establishment. Either that, or more probably he was looking to dabble in foreign affairs with young, blonde, drunk girls, and hoping to get us more drunk so that we wouldn't notice how old and yucky he was. Oh well, we thought; thanks you fool, we thought; it's free, we thought; just one more we thought! But one more turned into 3 or something like that, and I have to admit I was so damn drunk I wasn't sure if I really saw Cecile kissing Vikas or if my brain was foggy. Vikas whirled 3 drunk gals out of the club and cruised us home in his fancy car. That silly, yucky old man never did get to dabble in foreign affairs with drunk, blondies, and we didn't really pay for anything at the club that night! What a wild time!
When we arrived back at the hotel, loud, drunk, and ridiculous Sarah and I lollygagged out front while Vikas and Cecile slipped off to have intimate kisses. We were so happy for Cecile that she was having this teenage moment. She deserved it, after 20 years of the same old unexciting thing! We sat out front of our hotel while the doorman laughed at us as we slurred our words and danced in the streets and played with dirty street dogs. We hugged those filthy creatures, fed them leftover food, and giggled loudly. We made a teenage scene ourselves, and it felt great. We were drunk the way I used to get drunk in high school after playing quarters, (a stupid drinking game), and taking shots of goldshlager, (bad cinnamon liquor). We were smashed. I can't believe we hugged those dirty dogs that played in the muck and pig pen's in the streets of the dirtiest city, Delhi. But, we did, we hugged them and chased them when they ran away cause we hugged them too tight. We were so silly.
Eventually we went up to our room where we smoked hash and got more smashed. We figured, we are going to have one ridiculous night here in India and we are three quarters of the way past ridiculous already, why not put the cherry on top. So we did, and we slurred our words as the poor room service attendant tried to understand what we were trying to order for our way past midnight snack. He had to call us back 4 times just to get the right order out of us. And then when he did deliver the order we hid the hash in the bathroom and giggled and shoved way too much money in his hand to keep him quiet of our ridiculous de boucherous moment. He found us funny and went away happy for the extra tip, as we set out to devour our 2nd dinner in hopes of sopping up those coffee martinin's so that we could fall asleep.
And that's how the night ended. With 3 drunk, high girls giggling in bed.
I awoke the next morning with our way past midnight snack all messy on the sheets from drunk messy in bed dining. I also had a headache the size of Texas, and a bloated unhappy tummy, and a very foggy memory of the night before.
